How to import a QBO file into QuickBooks Desktop

A .QBO file is a Web Connect file — QuickBooks Desktop's native format for bank transactions. Importing one is quick, but the menu is buried and the account-matching step trips people up the first time.

The import steps

Open your company file, then: File → Utilities → Import → Web Connect Files. Select the .QBO file. QuickBooks asks which account the transactions belong to — pick the matching bank account from your chart of accounts (or create one). The transactions land in the Bank Feeds Center, where you review and add them to the register.

If QuickBooks rejects the file

Desktop validates the file's structure and its bank identifier tag. Files hand-edited in a text editor, exports renamed from .CSV to .QBO, and malformed files from other tools are the usual culprits — see our import troubleshooting guide. Files from the CSV to QBO converter include the required identifier and structure.

Older years of QuickBooks Desktop

Web Connect import works the same way across recent Desktop years (Pro, Premier, Enterprise). Note that Intuit sunsets bank feeds for Desktop versions after three years — but file-based Web Connect import continues to work even on sunset versions, which makes it the reliable path for older installs.
